Midnight Cyan

Before World 1-1

Controls & survival

Build momentum deliberately, preserve powered forms, and understand what the original game does—and does not—save.

Controls and momentum

InputActionPractical use
Control Pad left/rightWalk; steer in airRelease or reverse direction early—momentum does not stop instantly.
AJump; swim upwardHold longer for a higher jump. In water, tap repeatedly and steer between strokes.
BAccelerate; throw fireballs as Fiery MarioHold while moving to run and extend jumps. Use short run-ups when a full sprint is unsafe.
DownEnter eligible pipes; crouch while poweredTest only pipes with a safe top; most are solid scenery.
Start / SelectPause / choose 1- or 2-player modeTwo-player mode alternates turns; it is not simultaneous co-op.

Forms, damage, and lives

  1. Regular Mario/Luigi: one enemy hit defeats the character.
  2. Super Mario/Luigi: a Super Mushroom enlarges the character, permits brick breaking from below, and absorbs one ordinary hit.
  3. Fiery Mario/Luigi: a Fire Flower appears from power-up blocks when already Super; B throws bouncing fireballs. Damage returns the character to regular form in the original NES rules.
  4. Invincible: a Starman grants brief contact immunity and defeats most touched enemies, but pits and expired timers remain fatal.

Collect 100 coins for an extra life. A 1-Up Mushroom grants one immediately. Losing every life ends the current game; the unmodified original cartridge has no save file, while later emulation products may provide suspend points or rewind.

Stage rules and checkpoints

  • Reach the flagpole—or the axe in a castle—before the timer reaches zero. Remaining time becomes score.
  • Most stages have a hidden midpoint checkpoint. Death after crossing it usually restarts there; castles and World 8 are important exceptions, so assume a full restart until proven otherwise.
  • The camera normally scrolls only right. Do not leave a needed power-up or route behind the screen.
  • A flagpole's top awards more points, but any contact clears the stage. Survival is worth more than a risky maximum-height jump.
  • Warp Zones skip stages permanently for that run. Use the no-warp walkthrough if the goal is to see all 32.

Enemy playbook

ThreatReliable response
GoombaStomp once or hit with a shell/fireball. Leave landing room before jumping under low blocks.
Koopa Troopa / Buzzy BeetleFirst stomp creates a shell; kick only when its rebound path is clear. Fireballs do not defeat Buzzy Beetles.
Piranha PlantStop near—not directly on—the pipe until it retracts, then cross decisively.
Hammer BrotherWatch one hammer arc, then run underneath during a jump or attack from a different elevation. Fireballs reduce risk.
Lakitu / SpinyKeep moving so eggs land behind you. Attack Lakitu only from safe height or with fire.
Cheep-cheep / BlooperUnderwater, use small strokes and exploit the floor below Bloopers when space allows. On bridges, separate jumps instead of blindly sprinting.
BowserFire Mario can defeat him with fireballs. Otherwise read his jump, pass under or over him, and touch the axe to drop the bridge.

First-clear plan

  1. Play Worlds 1–4 without warps to practice every terrain type.
  2. Favor survival power-ups over coin-room detours when the timer is low.
  3. Enter World 8 powered if possible; it has no checkpoints and World 8-4 has no power-up.
  4. For castle mazes, stop sprinting and follow the written route exactly. A repeated room means the last path or pipe was wrong.
