Save-file orientation
The North American NES cartridge uses battery-backed saves. The file screen supports continuing, registering, and eliminating files. The number below a name counts game overs; the hearts show remaining health.
Your first move
EssentialEnter the cave on the starting screen and take the Wooden Sword from the Old Man. Everything else in the Gathering chapter is presented as optional; you may go directly to Level 1 after taking the sword.
Optional comfort route
Not requiredBombs and early hearts
The bomb shop is eight screens right and one up from the start; bombs cost 20 rupees. The chapter then routes through two bomb-opened Heart Container caves.
Letter, candle, and White Sword
Take the Letter to unlock potion purchases, buy the Blue Candle, and visit the White Sword cave. The sword requires five total hearts and deals twice the Wooden Sword’s damage.
Shield, Arrow, and potion
The documented discount shop sells the Magical Shield for 90 rupees. The Arrow costs 80 rupees but cannot be fired until you find the Bow in Level 1. Both potion forms fully heal; the second potion has two uses.
Blue Ring
A hidden Armos shop sells the Blue Ring for 250 rupees. Treat it as comfort, not a Level 1 gate.
